Paid-for subscription applications featured on social networking sites could offer new opportunities in the coming years, it has been suggested.
According to internetnews.com, the recent f8 conference - an event targeted at developers of Facebook applications - held in California earlier this week was attended by 1,000 people and featured a number of social networking-specific business models.
Chief operating officer of Facebook application developer Playfish, Sebastien de Halle, stated that there is plenty of potential for growth through subscription application and game services.
He said: "Instead of having to go to the store to buy games, we saw the platform launch as a great opportunity to bring games to people where they are."
Microtransition systems which allow Facebook users to purchase subscription applications through Google Checkoutand eBay affiliate Paypal were on display at the event, it was reported.
Meanwhile, a Facebook application entitled Scabulous has recently become the subject of an intellectual property lawsuit, with game manufacturer Hasbro - which holds the North American rights to the board game Scrabble - demanding that the social networking site remove the application.
