The National Football League (NFL) is developing a new website as part of its drive to establish the game as a mainstream sport outside the US.
Incorporating a comedy drama series, games and information about American football, the website hopes to draw fans of the sport in Europe and the US, reports New Media Age.
A comprehensive online marketing campaign is also being rolled out ahead of a Wembley-based match in October, which is the second the NFL has ever hosted in the UK.
David Tossell, the NFL's director for public affairs in Europe, said that the organisation wants American football to move beyond its niche bracket in the continent.
"It's a multi-fold increase in our online spend over previous years," he said of the campaign, which also includes a viral marketing component.
The executive added: "One of the big hurdles we have consistently strived to get over in the past few years is getting people to understand the sport."
As the largest professional American football league in the world, the NFL was established in 1920.
