Most Premiership web traffic from non-UK countries

The majority of web traffic to the sites of the biggest Premiership football clubs now originates in non-UK countries, according to a new study.
Research carried out by comScore for the period between August 2007 and May 2008 shows that traffic to the websites of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea mostly comes from outside of the UK, with the Asia Pacific accounting for the bulk of non-UK visits.
Only Liverpool saw more than half of its web traffic originate in the UK during the research period, comScore showed, while Manchester United derived the biggest share of its traffic from overseas.
Jamie Gavin, analyst at comScore, said the statistics indicate that the Football Association's proposal to stage ten extra matches a season abroad "makes sense".
"Generating additional exposure of these teams across other continents will help establish the Premiership as a sports league with a truly global fan base," he added.
Club website relaunches were recently announced by Chelsea and Arsenal, with both of the new sites making extensive use of Web 2.0 and social media features.
