Facebook has started its initiative to redesign the website by inviting users to preview and test the new design.

These trial participants will be required to compare the current version of the site with the new design, with access widening to all of the website's users over the next few days.

The new design was developed with help from feedback from Facebook users, with changes including increased use of feeds and the Wall feature of profiles and a new Publisher feature that brings together all of the core applications for uploading photos and videos and writing notes.

Facebook's usability has also been improved with a new navigational structure that makes more use of tabs, with tighter integration for third party applications and better control over privacy also featured in the new design.

"We've made the changes rolling out today in order to highlight the most recent and relevant information that users value, give users even more control and ownership over their profiles and simplify the user experience," commented Facebook founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg.

The social networking website recently launched an application that makes it easier for owners of the new iPhone 3G to access Facebook's features from their handsets.
