Those looking to launch the next big thing when it comes to a new website might want to follow the advice of one of the biggest online companies in the world.

According to Google, focusing first and foremost on the needs of web users is the key to building a successful online business.

A spokesperson for the search engine told PC Pro magazine that people should remember Google had no firm business plan when it started out, choosing to concentrate on delivering the most relevant search results to users first.

It was only when this became a success that the company looked at making money from advertising.

"If you focus on the user, everything else will follow ... thinking of ways to make money is secondary to us," the spokesperson explained.

"By focusing on needs rather than the bottom line, we encourage our engineers and product managers to innovate at a rapid pace."

Jerome Nadel of Human Factors International recently told the Web Content 2008 event that while user-centric website design is important, success-centric initiatives are more likely to bring profitable results, CMSWire reports.
