Multinational corporations are becoming more adept at web design for a global audience, according to experts.
Speaking in a recent web globalisation trends webinar sponsored by Lionbridge Technologies, John Yunker of Byte Level Research pointed out that companies such as Avon Products are combining the best global and local website design elements to appeal to web users around the world.
He noted that previous versions of Avon's Spain and China sites looked like they were for two different entities, while now the websites make use of the same template and navigation scheme while retaining their own cultural identities, SearchCIO.com reports.
"One thing I always emphasise, as important as global consistency is, it should not be so restrictive that the local offices don't have the freedom to promote locally relevant products and still have a design they feel works with their market," Mr Yunker remarked.
According to Larisa Thomason, senior web analyst at NetMechanic, elements as simple as colour schemes could carry different connotations for various cultures, giving the example of white signifying purity in the western world while also symbolising death in a number of Asian countries.
