Website design 'should leverage popular search engines'

Website designers could find that implementing solutions from popular search engines such as Google and Yahoo! may offer a better user experience than creating their own site search facility.
This is according to Erik Arnold of Adhere Solutions, who cited research suggesting that over half of web users first make use of a website's search box when visiting a site, meaning that businesses would do well to concentrate on offering an optimum search service.
Mr Arnold said that Google, Yahoo! and MSN all offer custom versions of their search technology for use with individual websites - and as these search engines are already popular with internet users, it may be a good idea to take advantage of these services.
"I know that I am not alone in leveraging Google, Yahoo! or Microsoft to find content on a specific website because the site search yielded poor results, yet so few use the full capabilities of these services to deliver their own site search," he remarked in an Information Today article reported by redorbit.com.
Google recently relaunched its Custom Search Business Edition product as Google Site Search, adding enhanced index coverage and cloud computing capabilities in the process.
