Sports-related sites took a significant chunk of internet traffic in the US during June, according to new figures.

Statistics from analysis provider Compete show that sports websites dedicated to the golfing Majors Championships and the US Open, as well as Wimbledon and UEFA, were among the most popular sites for web users last month.

"While it didn't peak as high as traffic on usopen.com, Wimbledon.org saw consistent growth leading up to the finals, before a substantial drop in the first week of July," noted Max Freiert of Compete in a blog post.

Other high-ranking websites included Applounge.com, which provides social networking applications, and online social journal site Plurk.com.

Last month, the European Interactive Advertising Association released research findings suggesting that sports fans are increasingly looking to digital media to get their fix of news, images and footage relating to their favourite events and teams.

The organisation said the study indicated that there are numerous opportunities for sports marketers this year as a result of the various major sporting events taking place.
