The BBC website experienced more than 3.6 billion page impressions every month during the last operating year, according to the corporation's latest annual report.

Released earlier this week, the publication also showed that more 33 million people around the world accessed bbc.co.uk every week on average during 2007-08, while BBC Mobile remained the most popular mobile browser for news, sport and weather.

Some 45 per cent of users looking such content make use of BBC Mobile, the report stated. The publication also highlighted the main talking point of the last year - the launch of the iPlayer.

Commenting on the service, the BBC Executive said: "Viewers and listeners are benefiting from a seismic power shift in their favour in the media landscape.

It added: "The digital future seems likely to become increasingly non-linear – and the BBC will publicly test other non-linear services like BBC iPlayer in the years to come."

The BBC will look at improving the accessibility of its website for users in the near future, as well as enhancing its search facility, according to the Guardian.

In the online sector, the BBC also makes trailers and programming features available to the UK public via YouTube.
