Mozilla confirms Firefox download record

The launch of Firefox 3.0 saw a record number of downloads take place within the first 24 hours of availability, Mozilla has confirmed.

A total of 8,002,530 downloads were recorded on the web browser's first launch day, officially setting a new Guinness World Record.

Mozilla had campaigned extensively to get users to spread the word about the latest version of Firefox in order to set the record via its Spread Firefox site.

"Our community members came together and not only spread the word, but also took the initiative to help mobilise millions of people to demonstrate their belief that Firefox gives people the best possible online experience," remarked Paul Kim, vice-president of marketing at Mozilla.

The news could be of particular relevance to those considering a new website design as it indicates a significant number of web users are making use of the Firefox browser as an alternative to market leader Internet Explorer.

According to Net Applications, Firefox 3.0 grabbed four per cent of global browser usage immediately after its release on June 17th, gaining one per cent in the first hour following the launch.
