Domain name changes 'will not make .com obsolete'

Recently announced plans to open up the domain name system to allow individuals and businesses to create their own addresses will not affect traffic to .com and .co.uk domains.
This is according to Andrew Bennett of 123-reg.co.uk, who asserted that people will continue to go to web addresses ending in these suffixes because they will always remember that those URLs belong to the main sites.
He conceded that businesses are likely to join the rush to register new domain names for e-commerce marketing purposes and to protect their trademarks, however, going on to warn that improper management of the process could lead to a surge in cases of cybersquatting.
"There are registrars who specialise in brand protection and companies often try to get their name in every extension possible, so their costs will rise," Mr Bennett went on to note.
According to Dr Paul Twomey, president and chief executive of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the changes - which are due to come into force next year - will result in a huge increase in internet "real estate".
