Businesses considering the benefits of using Web 2.0 sites such as Facebook for marketing reasons may want to heed warnings over the potential security risk posed by these websites.

Financial services firm Visa recently announced plans to launch a business community on Facebook and companies looking to follow in Visa's footsteps might want to make sure all information shared through such platforms is made secure, David Lavenda of WorkLight said to PublicTechnology.net.

He commented: "The number of employees at these companies that are actively collaborating on the popular social network is considerably higher and may be putting their organisations at a security risk."

Despite the warning, a growing number of businesses are finding Web 2.0 applications and sites to be a viable marketing channel, according to a recent report in the Financial Times.

Rachel Happe and Richard Vancil of IDC said that companies are increasingly utilising social media and social networking to obtain faster customer response and enhance authenticity.
