New search figures suggest that consumer enthusiasm for the new iPhone is high, a comScore report suggests.

The digital world analyst has revealed that 1.3 million people carried out 6.9 million searches for terms related to the iPhone in April 2008.

Dan Lackner, senior vice-president of comScore, said that the statistics suggest the iPhone is going to make waves in the world of e-commerce.

"Search is frequently a harbinger of purchase intent. The increase in volume of iPhone searches demonstrates just how heavy that interest has been for the next generation of Apple's popular phone – even when its existence was still just a rumour."

Some 88.4 per cent of iPhone-based searches that generated click-throughs took place on Google, which comScore observes is 33 per cent higher than the figure the engine's total click-through market share would suggest.

Apple was the top destination for queries related to the iPhone, with 16.5 per cent of these derived from paid search results and 83.5 per cent from organic search listings.

The 3G iPhone was unveiled on June 9th, when Steve Jobs revealed the "more affordable" phone would start at a price of $199 (£100).
