Clip streaming website YouTube was the most popular place for UK users to watch video content in March, a new report indicates.

According to comScore statistics, 48 per cent of all videos watched in March were delivered by Google, with YouTube representing 99 per cent of this figure.

By comparison, BBC rich media video tools such as the iPlayer represented 1.2 per cent of all videos watched during the month, the report found.

Some 81.2 per cent of all web users in the UK watched video content on the internet in March, collectively viewing 172 million hours.

In total, 27.4 million people took in 3.5 billion internet videos in March, the research found.

Meanwhile, the average clip watched lasted some three minutes.

A recent Fortune report noted that longer videos are emerging as an attractive option to YouTube and its parent company Google, who may be interested in the chance to integrate more ads into extended clips.
