Social networking website advertisers have been offered a new way of generating revenue from site users.

The FriendRank system developed by San Francisco-based SocialMedia Networks provides marketers with the opportunity to target users who exert significant influence over their friends and send them marketing messages in the hope that they will be spread around the network.

CNET News.com reports that the algorithm - similar to Google's PageRank - is capable of picking out these influential users by analysing the use of applications on sites like MySpace and Facebook.

"Traditional advertising and social media environments don't really mix," remarked SocialMedia's Dave Gentzel in a blog posting on the company's website.

He added: "Essentially, we're building mini-apps inside your apps, available when you want them, empowering you to share and communicate with your friends wherever you go."

In related news, Facebook has overtaken MySpace to become the world's most popular social networking website, according to comScore figures.
