The viral marketing potential of YouTube could involve full-length video content, the Google-owned streaming site has suggested.

According to Fortune, the site - which primarily deals in short clips - has been posting lengthier videos recently in a bid to attract more advertisers to the site.

Site representative Julie Supan told the magazine: "We've always believed that short form is why people come to YouTube.

"But as we test full-length content, we are starting to see that the audience is potentially there."

Site founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen are reportedly looking to introduce a greater number of longer videos onto the site - an online strategy that Google is said to be in support of.

Richard Doherty, director of the Envisioneering Group, told the publication that the extended format could enable YouTube to integrate more ads per view.

Recent comScore figures show that US web users viewed 11 billion online videos in April 2008 - four billion of which were screened on YouTube.
