A new social networking initiative is being developed by Microsoft, to function as a product testing tool.
TownSquare will act as a platform through which to glean information about the user experience of new technology concepts that can be shared with client teams, general manager of Office Labs Chris Pratley told Computerworld.
"They take the knowledge about usage so they don't make so many mistakes in product design," he said.
Information about the prototype is to be offered by the software giant at the Enterprise 2.0 Conference this Thursday.
Mr Pratley told the news provider that about 8,000 users have visited the site at least once, based on word-of-mouth advertising after the site was introduced to about 100 employees of Microsoft in January.
The news provider noted that TownSquare's layout is "strikingly similar" to that of Facebook.
In related news, the Telegraph has suggested that Facebook could soon be the most popular website in the UK, according to new Nielsen Online data.
