Windows 7 will make use of multi-touch technology from its work on the Surface initiative, Microsoft has revealed.

At the All Things Digital conference, Julie Larson-Green of Microsoft demonstrated the applications that could be seen in the operating system, including Touchable Paint, which enables users to paint with their fingers, PC Pro reports.

She added that the multi-touch technology will be built in throughout Windows 7.

Speaking at the event, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates said: "In the next few years, the roles of speech, gesture, vision, ink, all of those will become huge.

"For the person at home and the person at work, that interaction will change dramatically."

The Surface project was first thought up in 2001 and involved the creation of a touch-sensitive tabletop interface. The first Surface computer was sold last year and Microsoft predicts that the technology will eventually be used in a variety of retail and educational environments, among others, to improve the user experience in the future.
