A new report has predicted that the number of people viewing videos online could rise to one billion in the next five years.
The prediction was made by ABI Research, which said that a combination of factors such as growing broadband penetration and improving internet speeds could help to push viewer numbers past this milestone by 2013.
Cesar Bachelet of ABI Research explained that companies in a variety of sectors are likely to benefit from this explosion in online video viewers, including websites such as AOL, YouTube, Yahoo!, Lovefilm and Dailymotion.
He added that pay TV providers would do well to embrace video as part of an online strategy rather than see it as a threat. This may include providing PC-based services as well as traditional TV offerings.
"They can offer content beyond that available through traditional channels and they can reach a new set of subscribers," Mr Bachelet commented.
AOL recently announced the launch of its AOL Video service in Canada, India and Taiwan.
