The most popular website for news in March was the Sun, a new report claims.
According to digital world analyst comScore, about 30 per cent of all pages viewed during the month in the news category were from the tabloid's online presence.
Some 4.3 million hits were recorded for the internet incarnation of the newspaper in March, the figures indicate.
"It's clear that the expansion of traditional print newspapers to the internet is making a significant contribution to their overall readership," commented comScore's executive vice-president, Jack Flanagan.
He observed that 44 per cent of the digital population in Britain used the web to get news at some point over the course of the month.
After the Sun was ranked the Guardian, receiving 3.6 million visitors, while the Telegraph counted a corresponding figure of 2.8 million and the Times attracted 2.6 million people.
Meanwhile, Anne Spackman, editor-in-chief of the Times, told a conference recently that search engine optimisation was an important online strategy for the newspaper, according to the Press Gazette.
