Mobile technology is to be the next big development in the social networking sector, one sector expert has said.
Rachel Hawkes, co-founder and editor at Social Media Portal, commented that sites such as Facebook and MySpace are to become more readily available on mobile phones.
"The next big thing in social networks - that has been predicted for sometime but has not quite reached its potential yet - is mobile," asserted Ms Hawkes.
Smart phones, personal digital assistants and other types of mobile device are to become key technological tools in the world of social networks, she added.
Meanwhile, niche online communities catering to specific social groupings, from "baby boomers" to "firemen", are set to proliferate, the Social Media Portal representative predicted.
A recent report from Datamonitor found that the UK has the highest membership of social networking sites in Europe - and it looks set to triple, reaching 27 million by 2012.
