Google to expand mobile internet reach

Google is set to expand its reach in the realm of mobile internet with a new partnership, it has been reported.

MarketWatch stated this week that the search engine is pairing up with mobile firm Sprint Nextel to create the WiMax network, which is also backed by cable television provider Comcast and Intel.

It is thought that Google's investment in the project will total $500 million (£255 million) and will ensure that it is the "preferred" search service provider for the new network.

The firm currently also holds a US-wide mobile phone network license and is working to develop its own Android-branded mobile phone software.

"Everyone realises now the internet is all PC-based, but in a few years that's all going to change," said IDC analyst Caroline Dangson. "Google wants to be a part of that."

Meanwhile, it was reported earlier this week that details of a reported deal between Google and Yahoo are yet to be finalised.
