Establishing a web presence can be an important move for a business beyond sales, one expert has said.
John De Groot, managing director of Startup Co, commented that a sophisticated website is particularly important for small enterprises looking to move into selling online.
However, even companies without an e-commerce component may benefit from an effective internet presence, he said.
The creation of an "online business card" can increase a business's profile or credibility, explained Mr De Groot, whose company was founded in 1982 by a group of local partners in Worthing, West Sussex, as a resource for potential entrepreneurs to investigate the practicalities of starting a firm.
"It can illustrate achievements, clients, partners, awards, editorial, opinion, etc," he explained.
New domain name registration reached a figure of 10.7 million in the first quarter of last year, representing a year-on-year increase of 25 per cent, according to VeriSign figures.
