Credit crunch 'sends shoppers to the web'

Online shopping has received a boost from the credit crunch in the UK, according to one sector expert.
Simon Crisp, director of Shopsafe.co.uk, asserts that the internet is viewed by consumers as the place to get good deals - and bargains are a priority with Britons finding it harder to adjust to tighter credit conditions.
E-commerce sites are said by Mr Crisp to be taking advantage of the current economic situation, using discount codes and vouchers to give consumers ten or 15 per cent off recommended retail prices.
And fashion in particular is "massive on the internet", the director claims, with household goods also predicted to see strong sales figures.
"The future will probably stay strong. This year certainly people are looking for bargains online; they're looking to squeeze every penny out of their budget," he says.
Online sales were up 46 per cent in February compared to the same month last year, according to the IMRG Capgemini e-retail sales index.
