Social networking sites are booming and two leading companies are fighting to emerge as market leader, a new report asserts.

According to comScore, there has been a 34 per cent growth in the number of international visitors to social networking sites in the past year.

The total audience for community web spaces has reached 530 million, meaning that two in every three cyber surfers use the resources.

And these users are divided between two giants of social networking - MySpace and Facebook, the analyst's Digital World: State of the Internet survey suggests.

"MySpace and Facebook are in a tight battle for the global leadership position, each attracting more than 100 million visitors per month," the report states.

Other findings revealed by the digital world analyst include the emergence of Google as the dominant search brand in the majority of countries, with the exceptions being nations in which Russian, Korean and Chinese languages dominate.

The US reportedly represents some 21 per cent of web users worldwide, although the internet's growth in America has slowed compared to Asian and eastern European countries.

Owned by News Corporation, MySpace was founded in 2003, while rival Facebook was formed by Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg in 2004.
