The UK must ensure it does not fall behind other nations in the provision of high-speed broadband, a governmental advisory group has said.

A report from the Broadband Stakeholder Group released last April identified four key issues that needed to be resolved: policy, the development of an improved investment environment, regulation and appropriate government intervention.

Kip Meek, the group's chairman, has noted that failure to develop the broadband market in an appropriate way could hamper Britain's international position.

He stated: "I do think that in due course, it would be bad for Britain if we were behind our competitors on provision of high-speed broadband - of course the real question is, what does 'in due course' mean? When should this happen?"

His comments came as the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform launched an independent review into the provision of high-speed internet in the UK.

According to official figures, about 70 per cent of the British population are active web users.
