Widespread broadband penetration has improved accessibility to the workplace for carers and people with disabilities, it has been claimed.

Phil Flaxton, chief executive of Work Wise UK, observes that access to cheap broadband services has changed the definition of employment in a positive way for such citizens.

Technological developments have enabled people for whom it is not practical to go out to work to pursue careers from home, he says.

"By working from home, whether they run their own business or work for an employer, they can actually get back into the work pool," Mr Flaxton states.

Mobile technology is also cited as an important development to broadening the boundaries of employment to encompass a wider variety of people and skills.

A study by BT Business suggests that there are more than two million British home-based enterprises in Britain, while Work Wise UK claims that people who work from home experience productivity gains compared to their office-based counterparts.
