Investing in developments that make websites more accessible to users with disabilities can be a savvy financial move, a new report asserts.

The Customer Respect Group notes that removing barriers faced by users who are blind, have low vision or are cognitively and mentally challenged can improve sales, customer retention and market opportunities.

Terry Golesworthy, president of The Customer Respect Group, comments: "A strategic investment in accessibility is not only sensible, it is a vital component of moving forward with an inclusive approach to be able to work with as many customers as possible to maximise reach, revenues and ultimately profits."

Research by the group into the behaviour of corporate websites towards customers discovered that firms which approached accessibility as part of a wider business framework were the most likely to derive benefits from such initiatives.

Meanwhile, usability has been highlighted by a recent E-consultancy article as a key factor for online shoppers when deciding whether to make a purchase.
