Career websites 'could soar if a recession occurs'

European economic recession could drive increased success in the career websites sector, one expert predicts.
Bob Ivins, executive vice-president of European markets with comScore, predicts that a rise in unemployment may encourage more people in the UK and continental Europe to search for jobs online.
Mr Ivins' comments come as new figures form comScore reveal that careers websites were visited by nearly 54 million Europeans a month during the fourth quarter of 2007.
"Traffic to these sites represents a bellwether for the job market and if economic conditions worsen over the coming months and cause an increase in the unemployment rate, we can expect to see visitation activity at these sites climb," states Mr Ivins.
The figures name Monster as the most popular employment site, receiving more than six million visitors - double that of its closest rival, Stepstone.
Price comparison website Fool.co.uk has described a UK economic recession as "very likely".
