New research has revealed that 32 per cent of American consumers have accessed the internet using a mobile phone.

This is compared with a figure of 24 per cent for December 2007, the last time the survey was conducted, the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project said.

Almost one-fifth of US consumers use the mobile web on a typical day, up from 11 per cent.

The study also found that the African American demographic is the most active group when it comes to mobile internet usage, with 48 per cent of these users having accessed the mobile web at least once in the past.

John Horrigan, associate director of the Pew Internet Project and principal author of the report, commented: "With access in their pockets, many Americans are 'on the fly' consumers and producers of digital information."

Tom Foran of Crisp Wireless recently told WebProNews that it is likely national retailers will become the next batch of businesses to take to mobile advertising on a large scale following the success of mobile campaigns in the entertainment, automotive and financial services sectors.
