The internet was one of only two advertising channels to see growth in UK spending last year, new research has revealed.
A report compiled by the World Advertising Research Center for the Advertising Association showed that UK spending on interactive online marketing including production costs reached £3.6 billion last year, up 19.1 per cent compared with 2007.
Meanwhile, the overall ad industry experienced a fall of four per cent in total expenditure over the same period to £18.6 billion, with the biggest declines being seen in press and radio ads.
Overall, the web accounted for more than 19 per cent of investment in 2008, making it the third biggest ad medium in the UK.
According to the Internet Advertising Bureau, pay-per-click marketing represented the bulk of online ad revenues in 2008, followed by classifieds and display ads.
The UK recruitment industry spent the most on internet ads overall, with the automotive and technology sectors also investing significantly in the channel.
