New figures have revealed that Germany had the largest base of internet users in April.

According to comScore, 40 million German web users visited online websites last month, followed by the UK's 36.8 million visitors and a figure of 36.3 million for France.

Other top-ranking countries included Russia, Italy, Spain and Turkey, the last of which was found to be the European leader in terms of the amount of time spent online and the quantity of interactive content consumed per person.

Mike Read, senior vice-president and managing director of comScore Europe, said: "Much of this heavy engagement is driven by usage of social networking and entertainment media sites, which maintain users' attention for extended periods of time."

Google, Microsoft and Facebook were revealed to be the most visited websites in Turkey overall.

Earlier this year, comScore announced that the global online population surpassed the one billion mark in December 2008.
